Beyond the Static Rubric: Designing Living Standards for Assessment in the Age of Generative AI
Dr Chahna Gonsalves. King’s College, London, UK
As generative AI reshapes what students can produce — and how they produce it — traditional assessment rubrics risk becoming outdated the moment they are published. This interactive masterclass explores how educators can design “living standards” — adaptive assessment criteria that evolve as disciplinary practices and technologies shift. Participants will examine how rubrics can become dynamic scaffolds for learning and judgment, rather than static tools for grading. Drawing on emerging research into AI-integrated assessment and examples from practice, participants will experiment with redesigning rubrics to capture new forms of evidence, such as responsible AI use, prompt design, and meta-reflection. The session blends conceptual provocation with practical redesign, offering frameworks and examples that enable resilient, future-ready assessment design.
